She was born on August 31, 1870, in a small town of Chiaravalle in eastern Italy. She was well focused of what her aim and goal in life; at the age of 10, she was very ill, it proves her confidence, told her mother “Do not worry…I cannot die: I have too much to do”. She already held strong beliefs and had a forceful way of expressing them. At her technical education she had a love for mathematics and her first choice was engineering, she had a lot of challenges and was an unheard-of ambition for a young Italian Woman. With a strong mind and will to do, she got into medicine and was the first woman who got the doctorate in medicine. Her career in medicine practice, as a General Physician and her fascination towards children gave her the mind of understanding and working towards the child and their development; understanding the need and requirement of young-minds made-up her mind and decided to bring a change in approach towards the pattern of education. She did a lot of research and probably did research on Indian Educational System too, i.e, Gurukula System; most of the concepts and the ways of doing things has been absorbed and inculcated in the Montessori Philosophy. Her dedication, effort and sincere hard-work has given us a strong base for a meaningful way of understanding and helping children to prepare a Path for Life; with Freedom, Joy of Learning and Independence but with strict ground-rules of discipline.
